Biography

Dr. Shana A. B. Burrowes received her MPH in Global Communicable Diseases from the University of South Florida and her PhD in Molecular Epidemiology from the University of Maryland Baltimore. She completed her postdoctoral training in the Social Innovation in Drug Resistance program at Boston University. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. She is a faculty member in Boston University's Evans Center for Implementation & Improvement Science (CIIS).

Dr. Burrowes is a skilled epidemiologist with expertise in quantitative and qualitative research methods and analysis. She conducts mixed methods research and provides implementation science support to projects through her work in CIIS. As a faculty member in the Section for Infectious Diseases she lends her quantitative skills to hospital epidemiology and infection control projects. Given her methodologic skillset, she conducts research across a breadth of topics including HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease and risk factors, chronic pain with a focus on migraine, sickle cell disease and antibiotic use and prescribing. Her current research focus has been on infectious diseases with an emphasis on health in the Caribbean, minority and immigrant communities in the US. She has a specific interest in examining barriers to care in Latin American and Caribbean communities in the US, the impact barriers may have on clinical outcomes as well as the role of social and cultural norms in seeking and accessing healthcare.

As a faculty member from an underrepresented group, Dr. Burrowes is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for her mentees. She is passionate about encouraging and retaining diverse students in STEM and provides hands-on research, career and personal mentorship to her mentees.
