Biography

Dr. Noelle Saillant is a trauma and acute care surgeon dedicated to the care of critically ill patients through a multifaceted approach that integrates surgical practice, intensive care, education, and research. She completed her undergraduate and medical education at Boston University before training in general surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, followed by specialized training in trauma, emergency surgery, and critical care at the University of Pennsylvania.

The early years of her career were spent as a trauma surgeon and intensivist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), where she also served as the Surgical Clerkship Director. For over three years, she has been a faculty member at Boston Medical Center (BMC), where she currently holds the positions of Chief of Surgical Critical Care and Program Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Fellowship. In a multidisciplinary capacity, she has led major quality improvement initiatives, billing reform, and the development of ICU-centric education.

Previously, Dr. Saillant was the Surgical Director of the Harvard Medical School Surgical Core Clerkship at MGH, where she spearheaded a curriculum redesign aligned with the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) national guidelines. Her contributions to surgical education have earned her several prestigious teaching awards, including the Principal Clinical Experience Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award and the university-wide Bulfinch and McCabe Awards for excellence in teaching.

Dr. Saillant has been actively involved in several national leadership roles, including her work with the Association for Surgical Education (ASE), where she contributed to the development of the medical student core curriculum through the ACS. She also served as an advisor for curriculum reform at Harvard Medical School.

Her research focuses on trauma-induced coagulopathy, rib fixation, blunt aortic trauma, and transfusion medicine. She is actively engaged in a long-term collaboration with MIT Lincoln Labs and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command’s Combat Casualty Care Research program. As the inventor and principal investigator of the “Survival Chain” artificial intelligence triage algorithm and software, she is leading efforts to explore its applications for field-forward use in both prehospital military and civilian settings.

In summary, Dr. Saillant’s work as a clinician, educator, and researcher is dedicated to advancing patient care through leadership, innovation, and research-driven improvements in trauma and critical care.
