Biography

Dr. Ellen Cooper is Professor of Pediatrics at Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, and is in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Boston Medical Center. She founded and still directs the Pediatric HIV Program which now also includes an Adolescent HIV Initiative. In addition she leads the Transition Program for older adolescents who are transitioning to adult care.

She has published widely on the subject of Pediatric HIV treatment and care. She was a principal investigator of a large US based study designed to answer questions surrounding the perinatal transmission of HIV, and this continues to be one of her special interests. She was one of the original members of the HIV Consensus Committee, whose purpose was to establish guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of HIV infected infants in the US, and her expertise led her to focus also on treatment and care in a number of high burden and low resource countries. She has worked in sites in Uganda, Cameroon, South Africa, Zambia, and in Ethiopia.

She was a participant, trainer and advisor to curriculum development and implementation for the MTCT-Plus Programs in Africa, and served as a technical advisor for ICAP, Columbia in their efforts to establish a Center of Excellence for the care of HIV infected children in Zambia. She continues to be an active participant in the NIH sponsored IMPAACT Network.
