Student Residence Lounge and Fitness Center Update

The first floor of the student residence is designed to welcome residents and their visitors, while providing common space for informal gatherings and a fitness area.

The largest area on the first floor is the student lounge. Bathed in natural light, this 1300 square foot area is designed as a retreat for students to relax with friends, watch television or study. The space can hold approximately 90 students.

The earth-toned palate is warm and inviting. The walls are painted sandy brown, the carpet is taupe with honey colored flecks, three large couches covered in pumpkin-colored linen are flanked by coffee tables featuring sandy beige marble tops with stainless steel bases. Other seating in the room includes eight club chairs covered in beige linen, each with a chenille medallion on the cushion in a pumpkin hue. For small group work there are three round tables surrounded by four chestnut-toned wood chairs with pumpkin colored linen cushions. These tables and chairs are similar in design to those in the Instructional building lobby.

There is also a large console table with a marble top that holds a large flat screen television. Plans are in the works to include a grand piano.

Also on the first floor is the 530 square foot fitness room, which is designed in a cooler palate with gray walls and vinyl flooring in black with gray speckles. Equipment includes treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers, recumbent and upright bikes. This room is accessible to residents by keycard.

The nine-story, $40 million structure is designed by Beacon Architectural Associates with a brick and precast façade. Its 104 two-bedroom suites that include bath, kitchenette and living spaces will accommodate 208 students, each with individual bedrooms, the standard for graduate student housing. Walsh Brothers is the contractor for the building.
