Register for BU Women in Science and Engineering 2011 Workshop, March 4
BU Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) are hosting the 2011 Research Networking Workshop on Friday, March 4, One Silber Way, 9th floor, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. This workshop is open to all BU faculty. The event promotes research collaborations and peer mentoring.
The workshop begins with very brief presentations of research interests by faculty members with particular emphasis on developing areas and needs. These short presentations will be followed by lunch with participants grouped by common research interests and needs. Last year’s workshop led to several new collaborations and the goal is to build on this success.
This year WISE would like to hand out an abstract of research interests (with visuals) to participants, and with the permission of participants, to post the abstracts on the WISE web site. In order to compile these handouts before the meeting please send information as a pdf file by Monday, February 28 to wisersvp@bu.edu.
The final workshop session will be focused on practical steps to achieve career goals, particularly through peer mentoring. Peer (or horizontal) mentoring is usually done in groups of 3-7 people who are at the same career stage. An excellent example of women scientists who used this model with great success can be found in Ellen Daniell’s book Every Other Thursday (about a peer mentoring group that met regularly). Complimentary copies of the book will be available at the workshop. (Dr. Daniell will later be visiting WISE on April 6!).
Event schedule
- 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Introductions of individual faculty members and their work
- 12:30-1:30 p.m. Lunch with groups by research focus
- 1:30-2:00 p.m. Peer mentoring discussion break-out
Please attend for as little or as long as your schedule will permit, to submit material as you feel appropriate, and to let us know if you are interested in leading the discussion of a break-out research group or a peer mentoring group. There are some funds to support the development of these groups after the workshop.
Please send your lunch rsvp and/or abstract by February 28 to wisersvp@bu.edu. If you can only attend for a specific time slot, any participation is welcome; please let us know when you will be able to come so we can schedule your individual research presentation accordingly. We look forward to seeing you at the workshop on March 4!
