  • Dr. Remick served as an ad hoc member of the Board of Scientific Review for the National Institutes of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.
  • Barbara Slack, Pathology Department Russek Awards Committee Member, is pleased to announce that this year’s Russek Award recipients in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine are:
    • First Prize Recipient – Jacquelyn Sikora Hanson (Advisor: Lawreen Connors); Jacquelyn presented her talk on May 1st entitled; “The transthyretin gene variant G6S may be protective in wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis.”
    • Second Prize Co-Recipients – Caitlin Miller (Advisor: Suryaram Gummuluru) & Nicole Stauffer (Advisor: Joseph P. Mizgerd)
    • Congratulations to the award winners, and thank you to everyone who submitted abstracts for the poster session. Russek Day was held on May 1st in the Hiebert Lounge (L building, 14th floor). The keynote speaker this year was Dr. David M. Livingston, Emil Frei Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Posters were available for viewing throughout the day, and slide presentations by the first prize winners took place in the afternoon. More information about this event can be found at the link (http://www.bumc.bu.edu/gms/students/phd/russek-student-achievement-day-2015/)
  • David Sherr, PhD, MD/PHD student, Olga Novikov, won the School of Public Health’s Dean’s Award. See link below. http://www.bu.edu/sph/2015/04/15/olga-novikov-wins-deans-award-at-graduate-research-symposium/
  • Congratulations are in order for Emad Arafa and Jordan Shafran, both graduating Masters students in Nader Rahimi’s Lab. Emad and Jordan have been accepted in BU’s PIBS PhD Program; Bravo!
  • Nisma Mujahid, one of our MD/PhD student has been awarded the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Doctoral Foreign Study Award
  • The department’s biobanking team were represented by Chris Andry, Liz Duffy and Cheryl Spencer at a two day summation meeting for the cancer Human Biobank (caHUB) and Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) program at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD on April 22nd. All four biospecimen source sites involved in the pre-analytic variables study were represented as well as the analytics teams from around the country.  The BMC team presented data regarding biospecimen collection in the pre-analytic variables study as well as on the ELSI enrollment and consent surveys.
    • Analytics data on immunohistochemistry and in situ staining, proteomics and genomics are expected by late Fall.  The ELSI data was synthesized and analyzed by Dr. Teddy Warner, University of New Mexico with very interesting preliminary results
    • BMC’s biobanking efforts were recognized by the NCI leadership, particularly in the areas of quality and collaboration. All pathology faculty and residents were acknowledged for their contributions to the project

  • “Systems Biology of Cancer” edited by Sam Thiagalingam, PhD
    • A book edited by Dr. Sam Thiagalingam entitled “Systems Biology of Cancer” was released by the publisher Cambridge University Press on April 9, 2015. It provides a comprehensive account of the current state of the knowledge and a road map to formulate a blueprint for the biological basis of cancer. The emphasis of the book is on the biology with minimal mathematical derivations and computational methods which are still evolving to meet the unprecedented amount of data produced with high-throughput experimentation methods that are continuing to be developed.
    • Readers will be able to get a realistic view of what is known and remaining to be uncovered in the chapters presented by international experts on the aberrations in the fundamental biological processes, deregulation of major signaling networks, alterations in major cancers and the strategies for using the scientific knowledge for effective diagnosis, prognosis and drug discovery to improve public health. This will serve as a useful text on cancer suitable for students and researchers in all stages of their careers including the undergraduates. The contents are most suitable and highly recommended for graduate students, medical residents and fellows and experienced researchers. This landmark volume consists of a collection of 32 chapters with contributions from more than 75 international experts which includes 8 chapters by Boston University faculty and trainees. At this time the publisher is providing a 20% discount (see Flyer). Thiagalingam-Flyer-SystemsBiologyof Cancer-2015
