Description of Elective:

This will be an introductory experience in clinical cytogenetics. The student will gain exposure to laboratory cytogenetic testing. The student will learn chromosome analysis, karyotyping, peripheral blood chromosome analysis, analysis of bone marrows for cancer diagnosis, tissue culture of amniocytes and other tissues, and also be exposed to the newer molecular cytogenetic techniques such as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). A motivated advanced student with the appropriate background may be able to participate in a small project leading to a short publication.
