Brick Work is Well Underway at the New Student Residence!

Brick buildings have their own mystic. In Boston’s South End many of the residences are made of red bricks and the new Student Residence joins in this architectural tradition. Looking down Albany Street the scaffolding supporting the bricklaying activity rises up against the facade of the structure. Much of the brick work is well underway.

Other less visible work on the Student Residence includes the start of the installation of the elevator equipment, rails and cables. Plumbing work on all the floors has started, as well as PSI testing of the systems where compressed air is applied to the newly installed water pipes to identify any issues. The placement of HVAC fan coils on all floors has also begun.

Next week the chiller and generator will be set on the roof. The generator is for power to supply evacuation lighting in the event of a power failure. In addition work on the west facing windows will start next week.

The installation of the vapor barrier on the exterior of the residence is complete as is precast concrete band, except where external rear elevator is located. It will be completed in the spring when the elevator is no longer needed. The roof is now 80 percent complete.

The nine-story, $40 million structure is designed by Beacon Architectural Associates with a brick and limestone façade. Its 104 two-bedroom suites that include bath, kitchenette and living spaces will accommodate 208 students, each with individual bedrooms, the standard for graduate student housing. Walsh Brothers is the contractor for the building, which is expected to take 18 months to complete.
