External Research Year Programs
Medical students may choose to take an additional year (outside of the medical school curriculum) for full-time research. Students may choose one of two pathways:

AI Ready and Equitable Atlas for Diabetes Insights (AI-READI) Yearlong Research Internship Program
American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship
The purpose of the American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship is to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising students who are matriculated in pre-doctoral or clinical health professional degree training programs and who intend careers as scientists, physician-scientists or other clinician-scientists, or related careers aimed at improving global cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and brain health.
Benjamin Fox Orthopaedic Research Scholar Award
The Benjamin Fox Orthopaedic Research Scholar Award promotes clinical research by giving extraordinary U.S. medical students the opportunity to investigate pertinent topics in clinical orthopaedic research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
BIDMC Plastic Surgery Research Fellowship
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School seeks medical students taking a dedicated research year following completion of their 3rd year of medical school for this fellowship. This fellowship program offers experience in clinical and basic science research, led by Samuel J. Lin, MD, MBA. Research projects include surgical outcomes analysis, cost and utility studies, and translational/basic science projects related to biomaterials and noninvasive tissue perfusion assessment. Research fellows will engage in approximately 10-20 projects per year.
Dana Farber - Cancer Care Delivery and Outcomes Research Fellowship
The Cancer Care Delivery and Outcomes Research Fellowship provides a one-year mentored training experience within the Division of Population Sciences at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) in research focused on cancer care delivery for applicants who are from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in medicine (URiM).
HBNU Fogarty Global Health Fellowship
The HBNU Fogarty Global Health Fellowship offers 12-month mentored research fellowships in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) designed to address some of the world’s most pressing health challenges. LMIC fellows will have the opportunity to spend up to three months at one of the HBNU-consortium US institutions, as part of their fellowship.
NIH-Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP)
The
NIH Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) is a year-long program aimed at developing future clinician-scientists through immersive biomedical research experience. It is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of accredited medical, dental, or veterinary schools. The program includes research involvement, a comprehensive curriculum, and mentorship.
Clinical Research Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine
Third-year medical students are invited to apply for a Clinical Research Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. This is an extremely competitive fellowship that is awarded to one rising fourth-year medical student who has demonstrated a keen interest in orthopaedics and is a competitive candidate for orthopaedic residency.
Physician & Scientist Support Foundation Medical Scholars Research Fellowship (MSRF)
The
Medical Scholars Research Fellowship (MSRF) provides a stipend and allowances, for a year-long research opportunity in fundamental biomedical research for U.S. medical students aspiring to be physician-scientists. All applicants
must be nominated by the medical school dean. The medical school dean can
nominate only one applicant in any competition year. Our medical school will have an internal competition to select our candidate.
Poggi Pediatric Orthopaedics Research Fellowship
The Johns Hopkins Poggi Pediatric Orthopaedics Research Fellowship is a year-long fellowship program for extraordinary medical students. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge clinical research and learn the skills necessary to produce sound, high-quality papers.
Rheumatology Research Foundation Rheumatology Future Physician Scientist Award
Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Fellowship
The
Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers a year-long research opportunity for medical students at accredited U.S. medical schools to work intensively in a biomedical research facility. The program aims to engage students in cardiovascular research with leading scientists and develop future leaders in the field.
Vascular Research Fellowship
The
Center for Vascular Research (CVR) at the University of Maryland & Baltimore VA offers tailored research fellowships for undergraduate, medical, osteopathic, or graduate students, as well as residents taking a gap year. The fellowship emphasizes fundamental vascular disease research, the translation of discoveries into clinical applications, and the testing of new protocols and devices. Email

William H. Pearce, MD, Vascular Surgery Student Research Award
This is a 12-month mentored research experience for medical students to perform clinical or basic science research at the Division of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Awardees will perform their research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor selected from vascular and/or cardiovascular researchers at Northwestern University. They will receive close faculty mentorship, integration with like-minded peers, and exposure to career development activities.
