Providing Mental Health Care for Transgender and Non-Binary Adults

Speaker:

Brenna Cyr, LICSW
Behavioral Health Clinical Lead, Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, Boston Medical Center

Transgender and non-binary adults have been over-pathologized in the mental health community and face significant barriers in accessing care that supports them and the intersecting identities they may hold. This session will discuss their relationships with mental health providers and what we can do to provide care with cultural humility. Basic concepts including queer theory and identities will be addressed, as well as barriers to care and how clinicians can advocate for their clients. Using the lenses of trauma-informed care and the liberation health model, case examples will be provided to demonstrate building supportive therapeutic relationships that encourage patients to work towards their goals and understand their environment.

Learning Objectives:
    1. Describe and define the basics of queer theory and identities
    2. Discuss past and current barriers to care and how mental health providers can advocate for their clients
    3. Integrate trauma informed care and liberation health practices to provide care for TGNC clients with cultural humility
