Case formulations are used to conceptualize patients. There are a number of different types of case formulations including Biopsychosocial Formulations, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Formulations, Cultural Formulations and Psychodynamic Formulations. This QI study aimed to look at the efficacy of changing the curriculum of the case formulation series for PGY1 residents at Boston Medical Center. Historically, the formulation series was case based and did not discuss in depth the different types of formulations. This QI study utilized pre/posttest surveys to evaluate the participants’ mastery of the content, attitudes towards different types of formulations and self-efficacy to complete the different types of case formulations. Results showed that while this series contributed to improvement in knowledge, it didn’t correlate with residents’ feeling of self-efficacy. Additionally, residents’ baseline positive attitudes towards learning about different types of case formulation was maintained or increased after the course. Presenters will describe proposed changes in the format of didactics based on their findings.

Learning Objectives:
    1. Describe the different types of case formulations.
    2. Discuss the steps involved in implementing a medical education QI project.
    3. Describe possible changes to medical education based on QI projects in the future.
