New News Fall 2020

Announcements

  • Anna Belkina has been elected as the 2020-2024 Councilor for the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC)
  • Successful CAP Inspection:
    • Dr Beckwith and his inspection team were most complimentary about the work of the department. They recognized the important roles that faculty, support staff and residents play to ensure high quality care for our patients and community.
  • Carmen Sarita-Reyes presented a case of Placenta with Listeria monocytogenes in the Perinatal Conference for the Society for Pediatric Pathology on October 25th, 2020
  • Dennis Jones and his Lab published a review on COVID-19 and hyperinflammation in the American Journal of Pathology https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002944020304090
·       Shipley Prostate Cancer Pilot Grant Awardees Announced
  • Christopher Heaphy, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine/Hematology & Medical Oncology:

Current prognostic factors may not accurately predict outcomes for some men surgically treated for prostate cancer. Additional tissue-based biomarkers may improve personalized treatment strategies. Dr. Heaphy will investigate two promising biomarkers: telomere length alterations and nuclear lamin dysfunction. In preliminary studies, both biomarker levels show promise in predicting which patients will ultimately develop metastatic disease, thereby helping to oncologists to optimize the treatment plan. In collaboration with Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, these biomarkers will now be evaluated in BMC’s diverse patient population

  • Anna Belkina has been officially appointed as the Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility effective October 1, 2020
  • Jessica Kenison-White, PhD (Dave Sheer Lab) successfully defended her PhD Thesis, The Role for the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor in Autoimmunity and Tumor Immunityon Wednesday, November 18th. Bravo Dr. Kenison-White!

  • Nader Rahimi and his Team: “Transmembrane and Immunoglobulin Domain Containing 1, a Putative Tumor Suppressor, Induces G2/M Cell Cycle Checkpoint Arrest in Colon Cancer Cells” recently accepted for publication in the American Journal of Pathology and is now in press. In this study,  we demonstrate that TMIGD1 is progressively downregulated in sporadic human colon cancer and its downregulation correlates with poor overall survival. We have developed TMIGD1 knockout mice and demonstrated that the loss of TMIGD1 in mice results in the development of adenomas in small intestine and colon. Our findings identify TMIGD1 as a novel tumor suppressor gene, provide new insights into the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer and a novel potential therapeutic target. https://ajp.amjpathol.org/article/S0002-9440(20)30485-5/fulltext
