  • Announcements:
    • Please join in congratulating Nancy Miller, M.D. on her promotion to Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This promotion recognizes Dr. Miller’s national reputation in the field of pathology, specifically in the area of microbiology. There is amble evidence of her stature, including being an invited participant in preparing the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) upcoming international CLSI M-52 Guideline (User Verification/Validation of Microbial Identification and Antimicrobial susceptibility Testing Systems). This panel will establish the national guidelines for the identification of pathogens and antimicrobial testing. Additionally, she was an invited panel member on the nationally and internationally attended 2012 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) forum on Culture-Independent Diagnostics. Dr. Miller was the co-convener for the Symposium: “Fecal microbiota transplants and competing organisms: From practical to practice to promise”, American Society for Microbiology in 2014, and was a faculty participant for workshops (2012, 2014, 2015).

  • Carmen Sarita-Reyes was recently accepted for a leadership course at the APC meeting. From the APC; “The Association of Pathology Chairs’ Leadership Development and Diversity Committee, it is our pleasure to let you know that your application for the Pathology Leadership Academy (PLA) has been accepted. You will join about 60 colleagues for this special event, which will include lectures and interactive presentations by a host of nationally recognized speakers.” The Leadership Program will take place in July in San Diego, California
  • From Daniel Remick:
    • Daniel Remick, M.D., served as an external reviewer for the Department of Pathology at the University of Iowa. The two day review during the end of March 2016 was conducted as part of the University’s standard 5 year review of the Department
    • The NIH held a one day workshop on the physician scientist workforce on February 19th, 2016. Daniel Remick, M.D. participated as the Chair of the Research Committee for the Association of Pathology Chairs and the Vice President of the American Society of Investigative Pathologists
    • Daniel Remick, M.D. served as an unpaid external reviewer for CBMed, a government – private joint venture in Austria. The company is focusing on developing biomarkers including biobanks. The first review was held in Graz, Austria in February 2016
  • Caitlin Miller, PhD Candidate in Rahm Gummuluru’s Lab attended The Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, February 22-25, 2016 in Boston, MA where she presented a poster entitled, “Essential role of Vpr in HIV-1 infection of dendritic cells”
  • Huihong Xu, M.D., received the “CAPA Member of the Year Award” at the 14th Annual Meeting of Chinese American Pathologists Association on March 12, 2016 in Seattle, Washington

        • Barb Nikolajczyk and Lee Wetzler are hosting the Boston University School of Medicine Inflammation Symposium May 23, 2016 in Bakst Auditorium. All are welcome to join the cross-talk amongst inflammation researchers at BUSM and beyond.  Trainee talks will be selected from submitted abstracts. Please contact the organizers for more details.
        • Barb Nikolajczyk will chair and speak at an “Open Call” Symposium at the 2016 Annual Meeting of The Obesity Society in New Orleans, LA in the Fall of 2016. The Symposium is entitled Complex Data Sets in Obesity: Opportunity over Obfuscation
        • The multi-PI team of Barb Nikolajczyk (BUSM), Caroline Apovian (BMC/BUSM) and Doug Lauffenburger (MIT) were awarded $2.8 million by the NIH/NIDDK for a 4 yr. project entitled “Inflammation in Human Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes”.
        • Gerald Denis and Barb Nikolajczyk will chair “The Obesity Society Guest Symposium” at the American Association of Immunologists Meeting May 13-17, 2016 in Seattle, Washington. The theme this year is Immunometaboism and Cancer.
      • Watch David Sherr, PhD talking on the Science Coalition’s “Super Science Tuesday” about the need for all politicians to know why research investment is so important. This is followed by Dr. Sherr and three other labs discussing “Investing in Prevention at SPH”:
      • The Kurosawa Lab is welcoming new faces:
        • Eriko Morishita, is a Professor of Medicine from Kanazawa University School of Medicine.  Kanazawa is a beautiful city, just north of Kyoto, Japan. She is a trained hematologist, specializing in thrombosis and hemostasis.  Dr. Morishita is visiting our lab for sabbatical for almost a year.  Her interest is in thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA)
        • Takeshi Wada just arrived from Hokkaido University School of Medicine, Sapporo, Japan. Sapporo is famous for its snow festival. We do not expect him to be intimidated by Boston winter. Dr. Wada is a trauma surgeon.  His research interest is in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
