Registration for Teaching with Technology Festival closes 9/14

By Elaine L LeeSeptember 13th, 2018

BU's Digital Learning & Innovation (DL&I) will be hosting the third annual Teaching with Technology Festival on Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 9 am to 4 pm at the George Sherman Union (2nd floor, 775 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA). Faculty registration closes Friday, Sept. 14.

The Festival raises awareness of the rich ecosystem of digital multimedia technologies that are available at BU.  Learn how you can leverage these technologies to design and implement technology-enhanced learning experiences that encourage active and experiential learning.

The Festival also allows instructors to explore how this ecosystem can help them implement the BU Hub’s Digital/Multimedia Expression (D/ME) learning outcomes in their courses. Staff from the Center for Teaching & Learning will be at hand throughout the day and are looking forward to answer BU Hub D/ME related questions. The recent addition of university-sponsored Adobe Creative Cloud licenses for all undergraduate students and instructors teaching in the undergraduate curriculum puts these industry-leading technologies at your fingertips.

Some topics the Festival will cover:

  • Creating multimedia assignments in Blackboard or Sakai with students posting their audio/video creations through the LMS directly into BU’s powerful streaming media platform, MyMedia.
  • Enabling interactive multimedia course reflection and documentation, deepening student learning using e-portfolios.
  • Learning about the availability and the use of digital assessment technologies, synchronous communication technologies, various video and lecture capture technologies.

In the afternoon you can participate in hands-on creative workshops (sign-up required) that allow you to build your own media using applications from the Adobe Creative Cloud. Expert assistance during the workshops is available and you will have the opportunity to share your creations with other Festival participants.

Registered workshop participants will have an opportunity to walk away with technology prizes, such as a GoPro camera, Wacom tablet, a Kindle, or a camera and microphone package.

Research-Based Advice on Course Evaluation

By tdaviesMay 1st, 2018in homepage

Did you know that the Center for Teaching & Learning offers research-based advice on how to interpret course evaluations and student ratings?

Every semester, we help BU faculty understand which questions matter the most and why, and how to contextualize these survey results into a broader system of evaluation which can help faculty improve their teaching and their courses. Faculty can request a consultation at any time using our online form: http://www.bu.edu/ctl/consultations-program/request-a-consultation/

To supplement student ratings, the CTL offers confidential Teaching Observations and Learning Analysis Polls (mid-semester student evaluations). These two services provide a non-judgmental analysis of an individual instructor's strengths and weaknesses. In addition, our semester-based and year-long programs offer a variety of robust opportunities for instructors to network with other faculty and learn from the best instructors at Boston University.

Welcome from the Director

It gives me great pleasure to share with you that Department of Medical Sciences & Education at Boston University School of Medicine, in collaboration with School of Education, is now enrolling its first class for our Certificate and Masters programs in Health Sciences Education.  Please consider this exciting new opportunity for yourself and share it with your medical, dental or nursing colleagues and any other health professionals who may be interested in enhancing their skills for a career focused on medical and health sciences education.  Applications are now open on a rolling basis. Visit our website to learn more or apply now.

At BU, we have a reputation for offering practical approaches to learning that can be directly applied to adult-learner’s needs, and this program will be no exception.  We have designed this program primarily for working students to provide a broad-based foundation in the theory of education coupled with practical training in teaching skills specific to health sciences education.  Coursework centers around core themes of curriculum development, didactic and clinical teaching, educational research and evaluation.  Electives allow students to seek out additional coursework most relevant to their interests, and the practicum for Masters students provides an opportunity to apply these skills directly to a participant’s current day-to-day work under skilled mentorship.  Classes are scheduled primarily in evenings and can be taken part-time to provide flexibility for busy working professionals.

At BU and as a medical school whose core academic hospital is Massachusetts’ largest safety net hospital, we also have a deep commitment to celebrating a diversity of backgrounds, experience and ideas.  In keeping with this mission, we encourage a wide variety of disciplines as well as local and international students to apply.  We provide all students with individualized academic advising and support throughout the program.

Please register to attend a Webinar and/or an Open House and contact Jenna Luca jennalu@bu.edu for questions relating to these events.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,

Jeffrey F Markuns
