Critical Care – Echo

Our group uses large clinical, public health, and administrative databases to characterize variations in practice patterns and determinants of outcomes in the care of critically ill patients. Our research seeks to improve processes and outcomes of critical care by using advanced epidemiologic, econometric, and biostatistics methods to draw inferences with direct clinical relevance. Our NIH-funded work covers: epidemiology and management of cardiovascular complications of sepsis, management of analgesia and sedation during mechanical ventilation, approaches to vasopressor and steroid use in patients with septic shock, institutional compliance with guideline-recommended respiratory failure management, and outcomes of long-term feeding and breathing tubes placed during critical illness, among many other topics.

Director

Allan Walkey, MD, MSc.

Dr. Walkey is a Professor of Medicine at Boston University, where he Directs the Critical Care Research Group and Co-directs the Evans Center of Implementation and Improvement Sciences. A practicing Pulmonologist and Intensivist, he uses clinical questions as the seeds for research that seeks to identify and implement practices that improve the health of the critically ill, with a focus on cardiovascular complications of sepsis. As principal investigator of multiple R01 NIH awards, he has published >180 manuscripts cited >6000 times; he additionally mentors multiple NIH F32 and K23 awardees. Dr. Walkey serves as Associate Editor for the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, is a reviewer on multiple NIH Study Sections, and is co-Principal Investigator for the Society of Critical Care Medicine Discovery VIRUS COVID-19 registry. His research and mentoring has been recognized with awards from Boston University, the American Heart Association, and the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality.

Associate Directors

Anica Law, MD, MSc

Anica Law is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University. She is a critical care physician, health services researcher, and principal investigator on an NIH/NHLBI-funded K23; she also receives support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the BU Department of Medicine Career Investment Award. Using large databases and leveraging natural experiments where feasible, she seeks to understand the determinants of outcomes after critical illness in order to better inform decision-making during critical illness and the optimal delivery of care after acute critical illness. Her work has been referenced in media outlets including NPR, US News and World Report, and the Associated Press and has achieved Altmetric Attention Scores in the 99th percentile. She serves on the Editorial Board of the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, participates in the NIH Early Career Reviewer Program, and is Chair of the Critical Care Assembly’s Planning Committee within the American Thoracic Society.
