Research Training

Infectious disease faculty at BUMC are leaders across a diverse range of research areas, including bench science, epidemiology, clinical trials, implementation science, public health, and more. Our faculty have a strong track record of securing research funding and mentoring trainees, and Boston University consistently ranks among the nation’s leading universities for biomedical research.

As part of their training, fellows complete a scholarly project. Our program has many opportunities for research and mentorship across a wide spectrum of infectious disease. Areas of particular focus include virus pathogenesis and immunology, HIV/HCV/substance use modeling, interventional clinical trials, implementation science, and hospital epidemiology/antimicrobial stewardship. Infectious disease faculty also have strong collaborations with the Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine Virology, Immunology, and Microbiology Department, and the Boston University School of Public Health. Additionally, as one of only two National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories locations in the country, fellows have the opportunity to work at the forefront of new diseases.

For fellows interested in a research-based academic career – either clinical or bench research – there are opportunities for research training beyond the second year of fellowship. We work closely with fellows to assist in the identification of a mentorship team that will partner with the fellow in securing funding beyond the second year. More information on the other research programs our faculty engage in can be found here.
