Diagnosis of Scleroderma

A physician diagnoses scleroderma based on typical symptoms, complications, a thorough physical examination, and laboratory analyses. For a patient with Raynaud’s symptoms, a test called the antinuclear antibody (ANA) will be ordered. The rheumatologist will also use a special magnifying tool to examine the capillaries just below the patient’s nailbed. These tests, along with a detailed physical examination and medical history, are crucial steps in diagnosing scleroderma.
