Abstract: Jennifer Beane is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in the Section of Computational Biomedicine. She also holds a secondary appointment in the Bioinformatics Program within the Boston University Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences. Research in her laboratory focuses on developing and applying computational and statistical methods to expand our understanding of the molecular changes that occur in the airway field of injury associated with smoking and lung cancer. Her group uses bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial proteomics and transcriptomics, and pathology image analysis to: (1) characterize smoking- and lung cancer–associated alterations in the airway field of injury and develop relatively noninvasive multimodal biomarkers for early lung cancer detection; (2) identify molecular events associated with the development and progression of lung premalignant lesions in order to discover predictors of lung cancer risk and novel candidates for targeted and preventive therapies; and (3) define molecular features associated with indolent versus aggressive lung tumors to develop biomarkers that predict lung cancer recurrence.
