Nutrition and Weight Management Center

The Nutrition and Weight Management Center (NWMC) at Boston Medical Center is housed in the Section for Endocrinology, Diabetes, Nutrition and Weight Management. The NWMC offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services encompassing the entire spectrum of nutritional disorders and weight management for individuals age 18 and older. The multidisciplinary team staffing the Center is comprised of 5 nutrition physicians, 4 bariatric surgeons, 5 clinical dietitians, 3 surgical dietitians and 1 social worker. Individualized plans are developed for both risk reduction and/or management of the numerous medical conditions impacted by an individual’s nutritional status.

Adult outpatient services fall into two distinct areas, medical nutrition therapy and weight management therapy. Medical nutrition therapy encompasses nutritional diagnostic, therapeutic, and counseling services by a registered dietitian for the purpose of managing chronic diseases including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertensive disorders, lipid disorders, HIV, gastrointestinal dysfunction, healthy or complicated pregnancies, disordered eating, kidney and liver disease. Weight management services may be medical and/or surgical in nature, and include a number of diet plans, as well as bariatric surgery. Behavior modification, meal planning, exercise, interpreter, routine dietitian appointments, and support groups help complete the care continuum.
