In this program, students explore the relationships among body movements, power generation, and muscle physiology. The program consists of three units:
Module 1: Biomechanics
Module 2: Energy and Power – Macro to Micro
Module 3: Muscle Physiology
In module 1, students perform vertical jumps, examine the movements involved with this type of jump, analyze data generated from jumping, and explore the role that power plays in our movements. Module 2 allows students to deepen their understanding of how the human body generates power and the role that adenosine triphosphate (ATP) has in fueling our system. In module 3, students explore the muscular system, muscle contraction, and relaxation, as well as the molecular basis of muscular dystrophies and the potential for gene-editing techniques such as CRISPR to treat these disorders.
