“Peptide-based Stx Neutralizers for Treatment of STEC Infections”

At the conclusion of this activity participants will be able to: 1) state that Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli causes a spectrum of disease, ranging from asymptomatic carriage (rare) to diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and the hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS); 2) recall that HUS, which is a microangiopathic hemolytic anemia with thrombocytopenia and renal failure, is frequently life-threatening and a medical emergency; and 3) identify that there are no specific treatments for these illnesses.
