BUSM Professors Honored with CFA Educator of the Year Awards

Three Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) faculty members have been honored as Educator of the Year by the Committee on Faculty Affairs (CFA). These awards recognize BUSM faculty who provide excellence in teaching and mentoring. Awards are given annually in the areas of preclinical sciences, clinical sciences and graduate medical sciences at BUSM.

This year’s recipients are Adam B. Hall, PhD, instructor of anatomy & physiology, in the area of graduate medical sciences; Megan T. Sandel, MD, MPH, associate professor of pediatrics, in the area of preclinical sciences; and Edward B. Feinberg, MD, MPH, professor and Chair Emeritus of ophthalmology in the area of clinical sciences.

Adam Hall
Adam Hall

Hall has been a member of the biomedical forensic sciences faculty in the division of graduate medical sciences since 2007. He teaches courses in forensic chemistry, instrumental analysis and arson and explosives. At the Massachusetts State Crime Lab, he gained extensive forensic experience responding to crime scenes across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and he has qualified as an expert witness in Middlesex, Worcester, Norfolk, Bristol, Plymouth and Barnstable counties. Hall is currently developing a forensic instrumental analysis laboratory and microscopy suite suited for a variety of forensic chemical applications.

Megan Sandel
Megan Sandel

Sandel has been a member of the BUSM faculty since 2002. Also an associate professor of environmental health at BU School of Public Health, Sandel is a nationally recognized expert on children’s health. In addition, she is the faculty director of the BUSM Advocacy Training Program, a physician at The Grow Clinic at Boston Medical Center (BMC), research scientist for Children’s Health Watch and Interim Executive Director for the National Center for Medical Legal Partnership. Over the course of her career, Sandel has written numerous scientific articles and papers. She has served on numerous committees and advisory boards, such as the National Center for Healthy Homes and the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Edward Feinberg
Edward Feinberg

Feinberg joined BUSM in 1999 as acting medical director for vitreoretinal surgery and was chair and chief of ophthalmology at BMC for seven years. He has previously served as a medical officer in the US Navy and as associate professor and chair of ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Clinical Education Center Chattanooga. Prior to BUSM, Feinberg was medical director for eye emergency services at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Medical students and division of graduate medical sciences students nominate only one faculty member in each category. The awards committee and student representatives work together to select the winners from the nominees. The awards will be presented at the May graduation ceremonies and recipients will receive a plaque and a check for $1,500.
