Lowe Named 2010 Commencement Speaker

The Class of 2010 Commencement Speaker Committee and Dean Karen Antman are pleased to announce that Robert C. Lowe, MD has been selected as class speaker for the BUSM May 2010 Commencement. Dr. Lowe was nominated by the class and was selected by a majority of the students because he is very well respected and an effective student advocate.

Dr. Lowe serves as Associate Professor of Medicine at BUSM and Educational Director of the Section of Gastroenterology at Boston Medical Center. In his role as Education Director for the Section, he directs the Gastroenterology Fellowship program at BMC. In addition, he is the chair of the BUSM Second Year Curriculum Committee, which oversees the Disease and Therapy course at BUSM; Dr. Lowe also co-directs the GI Module of the DRx course. In addition, he has an active role in the Medical Residency Program, serving as an Evans Educator and attending frequently on the Medicine wards.

Dr. Lowe’s clinical focus is in hepatology. His interests include the evaluation of new treatments for viral hepatitis, the management of cirrhosis and the complications of advanced liver disease, and the treatment of fatty liver disorders.

A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Lowe completed his residency in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He then pursued subspecialty training in gastroenterology at Boston Medical Center, where he served as a Clinical Fellow. He returned to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1998 to serve as Chief Medical Resident, and then joined the Gastroenterology faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He returned to Boston Medical Center in the Gastroenterology Section in 2001.
