Kathryn Bacon receives RRF Career Development Research Award

Dr. Kathryn Bacon, Instructor of Medicine in Rheumatology, has received a Career Development Research Award from the Rheumatology Research Foundation.

Kathy’s research, titled “Machine-Learning Analysis of Longitudinal Gait Data in Osteoarthritis,” leveraging data from the MOST cohort (a large longitudinal cohort of people with or at risk of osteoarthritis) will use machine-learning methods to analyze gait data generated by wearable sensors and relationships with knee pain, structural severity of radiographic osteoarthritis, and self-reported physical function.

Through this study, we hope to better understand the effects of osteoarthritis on gait, particularly in the early stages, and how this may lead to disability and identify new treatment strategies.

Congratulations to Dr. Eugene Kissin – Designated ‘Evans Clinician’

Dr. Kissin has been selected to receive the Evans Clinician title.  This designation award was established in 2017 to recognize and celebrate outstanding clinicians who possess clinical skills, attributes and professionalism that define excellence and to establish a home for such individuals to share experiences and grow their membership.  Similar to the DOM Clinical Excellence Award, the designation is intended to acknowledge the value of clinical medicine and honor clinical role models among the faculty.

The award was presented at the Evans Day Reception and Dinner on Thursday, October 3rd at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston.

David T. Felson, MD, MPH Awarded an NIH P30 Center Grant

David Felson

Dr. Felson has been awarded an NIH P30 Center Grant. The Boston University Core Center for Clinical Research (CCCR) will provide broad clinical research methods expertise to a large multidisciplinary group of investigators whose research focuses on osteoarthritis and gout with a secondary emphasis on scleroderma, spondyloarthritis, osteoporosis and musculoskeletal pain. The group, which includes persons with backgrounds in rheumatology, physical therapy, epidemiology, biostatistics and behavioral science, meets weekly to critically review research projects and serves a broad research community with which it actively engages. It has been successful in publishing influential papers on the diseases of focus and in training many of the clinical research faculty in the US and internationally.
