New R01 for Mizgerd to study lung interstitial macrophages

Professor Jay Mizgerd has received a new award from the NIH, R01 HL181432: Lung Interstitial Macrophages and Bacterial Pneumonia. With this award, researchers will define pulmonary defense roles of lung interstitial macrophages, and how they may be bolstered by recovery from prior respiratory infections. These lung cells are difficult to study, so the team assembled (including Drs. Belkina, Campbell, Mazzilli, Nia, and Traber plus postdoc, student, and staff researchers) will use a combination of approaches including spatial transcriptomics, CITE-seq, precision cut lung slices, high dimensional spectral flow cytometry, biomedical engineering, and genetic engineering to elucidate these cells’ antimicrobial immune resistance and organ-protective tissue resilience functions.
