Fabio Petrocca, MD, Accepts Position as Medical Director of the Cancer and Hematology Clinical Research Program

Following our open call for expressions of interest, we are happy to announce that Fabio Petrocca, MD, has accepted a position as Medical Director of the Cancer and Hematology Clinical Research Program, beginning on July 1. In this role, Dr. Petrocca will be working closely with Anthony Shelton RN, Senior Research Manager, as the program continues to rapidly expand its portfolio and offer our patients access to new and promising treatment options.

Dr. Petrocca brings to this position extensive experience from a career that has spanned both academia and industry. He received an MD from the University of Rome Sapienza, Italy and subsequently completed a 4-year subspecialty oncology training program in Italy through the University of Rome Sapienza and Universita’ di Ferrara. He then completed a 6-year research fellowship/instructorship in cancer biology in the Program in Molecular and Cellular Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. After an initial appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Boston University, Dr. Petrocca moved to BlueBird Bio where he served as the Medical Director of Clinical Research and Development for 4 years. In this capacity, he led the clinical development of idecabtagene vicleucel, the first CAR-T therapy for patients with multiple myeloma. Over the past two years as a faculty member in the Section of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Dr. Petrocca has successfully brought in new clinical trials and established a cellular therapy program here at Boston Medical Center.
