Sarah Kimball, MD
Sarah Kimball, MD joined the Section of General Internal Medicine in 2015. She is an expert in immigration-informed medical care, researching and building health systems that are responsive to the needs of immigrant patients. She was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in 2024 and has been serving as the Director of the Immigrant & Refugee Health Center (IRHC) at Boston Medical Center since 2020. The IRHC is a comprehensive medical home that addresses the barriers that immigrants face to being holistically healthy. Dr. Kimball created a program that embedded immigration legal navigation and services within primary care, as well as measured how patient favorability and understanding of legal options improved.
Since joining GIM, Dr. Kimball has stepped into critical leadership roles. She was the Medical Director of Complex Case Management for BMC’s newly launched Medicaid Accountable Care Organization from 2017-2020, helping to build and implement new approaches to caring for the hospital’s Medicaid patients. From 2022-2023, she stepped into the role of Interim Associate Chief of Clinical Affairs in GIM, directing the primary care practice.
In addition to her love of primary care, Dr. Kimball’s main interest is in teaching social justice and advocacy skills. She is the founder and co-program director of the Immigrant & Refugee Preventative Medicine Residency. She developed and secured the funding to launch the first Immigrant & Refugee Health fellowship nationally, in collaboration with Preventive Medicine residency leadership. Dr. Kimball is an associate editor at the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health, with an expertise in Health Services Research. She was a founding member of the Society of Refugee Health Providers (SRHP), and serves as the Treasurer of the Board of the SRHP. As a leader in the GIM Antiracism Working Group at BU Chobanian & Avedisian SOM, Dr. Kimball has pushed for changes in hiring practices and developed tracking systems to ensure equitable access to leadership roles.
Dr. Kimball received her MD from Harvard University Medical School in 2011 and completed her residency in primary care and population medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
