Dr. Cesar Ugarte-Gil presents “The Syndemic of Tuberculosis and Depression: Implications for Diagnosis and Treatment”
Dr. César Ugarte-Gil is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public and Population Health at The University of Texas Medical Branch. He holds the Robert E. Shope, MD Professorship in Infectious Disease Epidemiology. Dr. Ugarte-Gil earned his PhD in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and an MD from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
His research focuses on respiratory infections, including tuberculosis (TB), COVID-19, and influenza. He specializes in the validation and implementation of point-of-care diagnostic tools for use in primary care settings. Additionally, his work explores the impact of comorbidities—such as diabetes mellitus and depression—on TB outcomes.
Dr. Ugarte-Gil has served as a member of the Expert Board for the National Tuberculosis Program in Peru and has worked as an independent consultant for PAHO and WHO on tuberculosis-related initiatives.
