Summary
Bilal Fawaz, MD, is the Assistant Program Director, Medical Student Clerkship Director, and an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Boston University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology. Dr. Fawaz received his medical degree from Texas A&M University, where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Fawaz completed his dermatology residency at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden, NJ, where he served as chief resident, followed by a Cutaneous Oncology fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, MA.
Dr. Fawaz has received several awards and research grants during his career, including the Skin Cancer Foundation Research Grant, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Cutting Edge Research Grant, the Dr. Demierre Humanism in Medicine Award, and the Teacher of the Year Award at Boston University. He is widely published in the peer-reviewed literature and author of several textbooks and book chapters.
Dr. Fawaz’s research interests include a wide variety of topics related to skin cancer, e-consults, and global health. He treats a broad range of medical and cosmetic skin conditions, and he has particular expertise in skin cancer, e-consults, procedural dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology. He is currently the Principal Investigator (PI) of a multi-center clinical trial investigating a new, non-invasive topical treatment for skin cancers. In addition, as part of the Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Fawaz teaches dermatology to BU residents, international trainees, and medical students. His passion for education earned him the Teacher of the Year Award in 2021.
Dr. Fawaz has also been involved in global health since medical school, and he has long hoped to take advantage of the visual nature of dermatology to improve access to care. He has extensive experience in teledermatology through the e-consult service at Boston Medical Center, and he is currently overseeing a comprehensive research project investigating the advantages and limitations of e-consultations. He has recently founded DermHub, a new app-based teledermatology service hoping to improve access to first-tier dermatologic care across the world.
