DNA, Genes, and Drug Production focuses on the central concepts and skills of recombinant DNA technology as they apply to biotechnology. The use of green fluorescent protein (GFP) allows students to visualize the processes of gene expression, cell lysis, and protein purification. This is a one-week program. Watch this video to see students speak about their experiences in this program.
Gene Editing in Human Disease allows students to learn state-of-the-art CRISPR gene editing, a technique that was recognized by the 2020 Nobel Prize. Through hands-on experiences, students will learn how gene editing can be used to cure disease as well as exploring the ethical and social considerations of the use of these new techniques. This is a two-week program.
These programs will meet Monday-Friday from 9AM to approximately 3PM each day. This is a commuter program, so students who live beyond the distance for a daily commute will need to make their own arrangements for suitable accommodations in Boston. Room and board at Boston University will not be available in Summer 2024.
Students must be 15 years old by June 30, 2024 in order to attend. No transcripts, teacher recommendations, or test scores are needed.
NEW FOR 2024: Students can participate for one week (DNA, Genes, and Drug Production), two weeks (Gene Editing in Human Disease), or three weeks (both programs).
Fee:
DNA, Genes, and Drug Production – $1,500, due in full by May 31, 2024.
Gene Editing in Human Disease – FREE, but $1,000 deposit required by May 31, 2024 to participate in this program. This deposit will be refunded in full as long as the student attends every day of the 10-day program. This program is partially supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) program.
Scholarships are available for students who qualify for the Federal free/reduced price lunch program.
