Neurology Clerkship Learning Objectives

By the end of the Clerkship the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competency in performing and interpreting the neurological history and examination, i.e. the ability to recognize abnormal findings on the examination and put these together with the history to localize the lesion in the nervous system. ( U2, U3, U4, U7, B3, C1, C4)
  2. Assess, formulate a differential diagnosis and propose initial evaluation and management for patients with common neurological disorders. (U.2, U.3, U.4, U.5, U.6, U.7, U.9, C.1, R.2, R.3, S.4)
  3. Localize a lesion in the nervous system based on history and examination. (U.2, U.3, U7)
  4. Recognize the indications and the information obtained from routine neurological tests such as lumbar puncture, electroencephalography, electromyography, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Also, to become familiar with the possible complications of these tests. (U.1, U.3, U.4, R.2, S.3, S7)
  5. Describe routine treatments for neurological diseases and the risks of these treatments. (U.4, U5, R.1, R.3)
  6. Describe how end of life, cultural competency, and domestic violence issues are addressed in neurologic patients. (B.1, B.3, U.4, C.2, C.7, A.4)
  7. Discuss how health care disparities can affect underserved populations and impact medical care.  (B4, S.8, C.4)
  8. Demonstrate competency in performing LP Simulation (B1)
  9. Consistently demonstrate professional behavior consistent with the values of the medical profession (A.1, A.2, A.3, A.4, A.5, A.6, E.7).

Didactic Schedule

Didactics take place every Tuesday. Topics for lectures include: neurosurgery, Pain: From injection to anatomy, Stroke, Shelf review, pediatric neurology, concussion, sleep, epilepsy, neuro ICU, neuro rehab, LP SIM, neuro muscular,  movement disorders, neuro ophthalmology and bedside skill sessions.
