“Inside” B.U. Electives
There are endless resources for identifying clinical elective sites. Students are strongly encouraged to review established BUSM-affiliated sites before exploring “outside” electives. One month of an “inside” elective counts as a BUSM elective (i.e., not an “away” elective). This is pertinent to the fact that students are permitted only three away electives during their fourth year.
The following countries sponsor BUSM students for “inside” electives since affiliations have been established at the sites designated below. Faculty approval for each “inside” elective may be different.
- Armenia
- China (Hong Kong)
- Greece
- Indian Health Service (not a country, but IHS serves American Indians and Alaska Natives)
- Israel
- Lesotho
- Vietnam
The following Medical Spanish programs qualify as “inside” electives and are the only Spanish programs for which you can receive credit. Dr. Sarfaty is the B.U. mentor for these programs:
- International Health Central American Institute
- Interhealth South America (medical Spanish language immersion in Ecuador with clinical practicum, and Andes Mountains study tour program in international health)
- University of Nebraska Medical Spanish/International Health Course (onsite exposure to primary and community health care in Guatemala with immersion Spanish language study, sponsored by the University of Nebraska Medical Center)
- Amerispan Salud (Latin America)
