Inpatient Clinical Training

Inpatient Consult Service

Gastroenterology fellows rotate on the inpatient consult service and take call at both Boston Medical Center and at the West Roxbury VA.

The inpatient consult rotation is structured to provide fellows with the independence and experience necessary to develop a sound knowledge base of the diagnosis and management of more bread and butter as well as complex and unusual gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Fellow autonomy is balanced with the support of experienced attendings, who provide a safe space for learning and growth.

During the first year, fellows spend approximately eleven months on the consult service, one-third of which is at the VA. VA coverage is shared with the GI fellows of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in a unique and supportive partnership amongst the fellows. The inpatient consult service at BMC has an average of 5-7 new consults per day and the inpatient consult service at the VA has an average of 2-4 new consults per day. The inpatient fellow will perform the procedures on all of the patients he or she consults on, further solidifying clinical learning.

Furthermore, during the inpatient time at BMC, fellows have the opportunity to educate and role-model for medical students and residents.
