BU’s Global Health MOOC

As part of the fourth annual International Education Week (IEW) Nov. 16-20, BUSM is announcing a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), “The Practitioner’s Guide to Global Health – Part 1: The Big Picture.” Whether you are a clinician, researcher, volunteer or student, you will learn how to safely and effectively participate in global health rotations and projects by participating in this free online course.

The first of three courses that will provide an introduction to global health for a wide range of careers, Part 1 focuses on identifying different types of global health experiences, choosing the best experience based on individual interest and setting up a successful project. Video lectures are given by a panel of global health experts and then put into practice through interactive planning sessions. The course can be accessed through edX, a nonprofit MOOC provider. It is free to join but a Verified Certificate can be purchased for $50. No previous global health or healthcare experience is required.

The course is taught by six instructors, including BUSM faculty Suzanne Sarfaty, MD and Gabrielle Jacquet, MD. Sarfaty, assistant dean of Academic Affairs, director of Global Health Programs, associate professor of Medicine and associate clerkship director of Medicine, and Jacquet, assistant professor of Emergency Medicine, have extensive global health experience and a strong commitment to medical education.

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative between the U.S. Departments of State and Education, celebrating international education and exchange. More information about Boston University’s IEW events can be found on their website.
