Architectural details are coming to the student residence

While it is easy to see the progress of the brick work on the exterior of the new student residence, it is harder to see behind the white tarps that are hiding the installation of the curtain wall system that includes glass and decorative metal panels. This work is in full swing and when completed there will be a dramatic change in the appearance of the building.Nov. 8

Work on another architectural detail, the canopy, which will draw attention to the building’s entrance and will serve as a focal point, is scheduled to start before Thanksgiving. Other less visually dramatic but very important work on the site includes grading and excavation in preparation for bringing electrical service to the building. A concrete pad is being poured behind the building to receive the electrical transformer.

Work on the mechanical equipment including elevator, electrical switch gear, chiller, pumps and HVAC are scheduled to be completed by the end of November. Approximately 80 percent of the HVAC fan coils are in place on all floors. Elevator entries on each floor are roughed-in for frames. The next step is constructing the elevator cab for use and this is scheduled to be complete by the end of December.

The nine-story, $40 million structure is designed by Beacon Architectural Associates with a brick and precast façade. Its 104 two-bedroom suites that include bath, kitchenette and living spaces will accommodate 208 students, each with individual bedrooms, the standard for graduate student housing. Walsh Brothers is the contractor for the building, which is expected to be complete June 2012.
