The Boston University (BU) – Rutgers University (RU) Tuberculosis Research Unit (TBRU) is a collaboration of scientists and clinicians from the US and TB endemic countries dedicated to the elucidation of biomarkers and mechanisms that pose a risk of progression from LTBI to active disease and of treated TB to relapse. It was established on August 1st, 2014 upon approval for funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The multidisciplinary approach includes principally microbiology, immunology, molecular genetics and epidemiology. The collaborative network includes faculty based at Boston University, Rutgers University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Seattle Biomedical Research Institute. The program benefits from international collaborations and clinical sites at Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo in Vitória, Brazil, and the Clinical Infectious Diseases Research Initiative (CIDRI) at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
