GSDM Faculty Appointments and Promotions
Congratulations to the following Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine faculty on their recent appointment or promotion.
Associate Professor
Alexandros Tsouknidas, PhD, Restorative Sciences & Biomaterials, joined the GSDM faculty in July 2024 as director of the Applied Biomechanics Lab. He comes to BU from the University of Western Macedonia where he served in several roles, most recently as associate professor of biomedical engineering, director of the MSc Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Laboratory of Biomaterials and Computational Mechanics. In 2022 Dr. Tsouknidas was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and subsequently was invited to GSDM as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Restorative Sciences & Biomaterials from September 2022-February 2023. During this time, Dr. Tsouknidas collaborated on, “Mechanobiology in tissue engineering: The untold dialogue between cells and scaffolds.” In November 2023 he was recognized as a Fulbright Outreach Ambassador for Greece. He is a supervisor on a fellowship from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, “Investigating Osteoblastic Cell Mechanotransduction in 3D-Printed Scaffolds for Dental and Craniofacial Applications.” He serves on three editorial boards, including the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
Clinical Associate Professor
Myron Allukian, DDS, MPH, Health Policy & Health Services Research, is a leader in dental public health (DPH) and has been an important contributor to the DPH residency and post-graduate education program as a teacher and mentor. He has been honored multiple times for public advocacy efforts and his many contributions to improving the public’s health through the programs that he has led. Most notable was his leadership in implementing community water fluoridation in Boston in 1978. Dr. Allukian is only the second dentist to be elected president (1989-90) of the American Public Health Association (APHA) since its founding in 1872. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the APHA’s Sedgwick Memorial Medal for Distinguished Service in Public Health (2001), and the Paul Revere Award for Lifetime Achievement (2022) presented by Massachusetts Public Health Association, for which he remains the only dentist to have received either of these prestigious awards.
