Tsuneya Ikezu to Participate in Federation of European Neuroscience Societies Symposia

Tsuneya Ikezu, PhD has been invited to participate in the satellite symposia of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) “Cognitive Enhancement in Health and Disease,” taking place in Spain in July. He will speak on “Enhancement of Neurogenesis and Cognitive Function by Adeno-Associated Virus-Mediated Gene Therapy in Animal Models of Alzheimer’s.”

This event is designed to answer two fundamental questions on contemporary neuroscience research:

  • First, is it possible to enhance learning and memory capabilities in rodents?
  • Second, what are the cellular, molecular and synaptic mechanisms underlying enhanced cognition?

Experts in animal behavior, synaptic plasticity and cell biology will explain the key synaptic and signaling events that can be manipulated to enhance the acquisition or retention of information. There will be discussion of the ongoing efforts to develop novel pharmacological strategies for disorders involving cognitive impairment.

Dr. Tsuneya Ikezu, serves as a professor in BUSM’s department of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics and Neurology. His research focuses on neuroimmunology and how the innate immune-related molecules in the central nervous system (CNS) influence the pathology and progression of select neurodegenerative disorders e.g. Alzheimer’s Disease. Further, his lab investigates pharmacological means to suppress the innate immune response in the CNS with the goal of enhancing neuronal protection and minimizing collateral damage from an activated immune response in the CNS.
