Dr. Alford is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. He is a clinician educator with academic interests in chronic pain management and substance abuse disorders including the treatment of opioid dependence in primary care settings. Dr. Alford is the principal investigator for the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment funded Massachusetts Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment (MASBIRT) project. The aim of MASBIRT is to expand alcohol and drug screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment in generalist health care settings in Massachusetts. He is also co-investigator for 2 NIH- funded projects aimed at training physician educators to teach substance abuse clinical practice.

Ash, Arlene S., Ph.D.

Dr. Ash is a Research Professor at Boston University’s School of Medicine (Section of General Internal Medicine) and an Adjunct Research Professor at its School of Public Health (Department of Biostatistics). She is the director of the Health care Research Unit. Her interests include: disparities research (examining differences in health care service delivery and outcomes by race, sex and age) as a lens for understanding the mechanisms of suboptimal care; implementing payment models (e.g., in Medicare) that reimburse providers more when they care for sicker patients; using Medicare and other administrative databases for research; efficient sampling for identifying systemic problems in health delivery systems; and methodologic and policy issues in using risk-adjusted outcomes to compare providers. Dr. Ash is a Fellow of AcademyHealth and of the American Statistical Association and is a recent Past- Chair of ASA’s Health Policy Statistics Section. Her largest currently funded research projects are “Racial Disparities in Healthcare Services for Medicare Beneficiaries” and “Risk Assessment of Military Populations to Predict Health Care Cost and Utilization.”

Dr. Battaglia is an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine and Epidemiology, School of Public Health. Dr. Battaglia serves as the Associate Program Director of Preventive Medicine Residency Program and is Chair of the Quality Assurance Subcommittee of the BMC Cancer Care Committee. Her research focus is on women’s health and preventive medicine. Areas of particular concentration are: breast and cervical cancer screening in minority and underserved women; reducing errors in follow-up to abnormal mammography; risk perception and screening behaviors in multi-ethnic populations. She is currently principal investigator on the BU funded project entitled “Effect of Cancer Risk Perceptions and Screening Practices Among Black and White Women (01-499- 77-167), and Co-PI of NCI funded UO1 Patient Navigation in the SafetyNet. She has been granted a career development award funded by the ACS: “Cancer Control Career Development Award for Primary Care Physicians”. She has been appointed as a BIRCWH (Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health) Scholar funded by the Office of Women’s Health (BIRCWH K12). Dr. Battaglia is also the co-director of the Avon Breast Health Initiative (AVON BHT).

Dr. Carr is Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Her research focus is obstacles to career advancement for women and minorities with publications in JAMA, the Annals of Internal Medicine, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, the Mayo Clinic Proceedings and Academic Medicine, as well as a monograph for the Kellogg Foundation, which is a resource guide for medical faculty. Her other area of academic and clinical interest is Women’s Health; she is an editor of two texts in Women’s Health.

Dr. David was born in Haiti and is Co-Director of the Haitian Health Institute at Boston Medical Center, an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine, a staff physician with the Women’s Health Group, and a Faculty member of the Preventive Medicine Residency Program. In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. David is an active public health researcher, community educator. Because Dr. David’s interests include the amelioration of a range of public health problems, which affect communities of color, she has pursued epidemiological research on health disparities, public health programs, and educational campaigns on such diverse topics as respiratory illnesses, breast and cervical cancer, HIV disease, hypertension, nutrition, and diabetes. Dr. David has participated in the development on a cultural competence curriculum in Breast and Cervical Cancer, REACH 2010, in 2001 and Cultural competence curriculum in Women ’s Health in 2002. Dr. David has been recognized with a leadership award by the Haitian American Public Health Initiatives, Inc for her work in the Haitian community, and as an outstanding physician by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care for her extraordinary performance in delivery excellent care in 2000.

Dr. Delgado is an Assistant Professor at Boston Universoty School of Medicine. She is the medical director of the Latino Health Clinic-Primary Care. Her academic interests include Latino health issues, cultural disparities on medical care and diabetes management. She coordinates the Spanish diabetic group visits program in the Latino Health Clinic at BMC-Primary Care Center. This novel program brings a group of diabetic patients together in order to discuss the important aspects of diabetes care and management.

Farzanfar, Ramesh, Ph.D.

Dr. Farzanfar is an Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Medicine and a Senior Investigator in the Medical Information Systems Unit. Her research interests include evaluation of automated health behavior change and patient self-care promotion intervention programs, focusing on the users’ experience (human-computer interaction). She is currently directing several NIH funded intervention projects including studies in medication adherence in depression, symptom monitoring in cancer chemotherapy, methodology and instrument development as well as evaluation of health promotion and disease prevention technologies.

Dr. Freund, Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine is Chief of the Women’s Health Unit of the Section of General Internal Medicine. Her research, clinical and educational focus is on delivery of comprehensive health care to women. Specific topics of her research include the delivery of screening services, and understanding and addressing disparities in health outcomes. Breast cancer health care delivery has been a focus of the Unit’s work, but it also includes prevention and care for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders. The Women’s Health Group, the clinical practice of the Unit, addressing comprehensive care to women, including preventive care, primary care, breast health care and mental health care. The educational arm of the Unit includes the Women’s Health Fellowship, funded through the Boston VA HealthCare System by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the NIH funded “Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health” junior faculty institutional K award program. The Women’s Health Unit is one of first sites designated as a National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health by the Office of Women’s Health, Department of Health and Human Services.

Friedman, Robert H., M.D.

Dr. Friedman is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Boston University and Boston Medical Center. He is Chief of the Medical Information Systems Unit in the Section of General Internal Medicine where he directs a research group of 30 staff including 4 faculty in Medical Informatics research and education. He has been the recipient of 28 externally funded research grants including fifteen NIH grants, nine of which are currently active. His research is at the interface between information technology and clinical medicine/public health and is focused on design and evaluation of totally automated systems that deliver health and human services. Dr. Friedman is actively involved in education, particularly in research methodology and medical informatics. He is the director of a combined Family Medicine/General Internal Medicine research training program at Boston University. This program has placed more than 70 current research-oriented medical school faculty in the United States and Canada over the past 20 years. Dr. Friedman is also the director of a post doctoral Medical Informatics Fellowship Program at Boston University designed to train research-oriented medical informatics professionals. He is currently the PI on 3 federal research training grants that support these fellowship training programs. In these programs as well as outside of them, he has a personal role in mentoring trainees in research including bioethics and public health.

Dr. Kreger is a Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. He spends the majority of his time practicing primary care general internal medicine. His research interests have centered on the Framingham Heart Study, where he has concentrated on the epidemiology of cancer, particularly as related to cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular risk factors. In addition, he has studied cost containment and appropriateness in the provision of health care.

Nancy Kressin, PhD is a psychologist and senior health services researcher affiliated with the Center for Health Quality, Outcomes & Economic Research at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital (a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Services Research & Development Service Center of Excellence). Dr. Kressin is an Associate Professor of Medicine. In 2001, in recognition of her many contributions to Health Services Research within the Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Kressin was named a research career scientist, a designation held by only 11 senior Ph.D. Health Services Researchers in VA.
Dr. Kressin is the Director the the Health Care Disparities Research Unit located in the Section of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Kressin has trained in cross-cultural psychology and the social sciences, and long been interested in the effects of culture on both patients and providers in the medical encounter. Her research examines possible underlying mechanisms for racial/ethnic disparities in health and health care by studying patient and provider perspectives on treatment decision-making and on patients’ adoption of recommended therapies, including surgical and dental procedures, prescribed medication, and preventive oral hygiene behaviors.
Dr. Kressin is the author or co-author of over sixty scientific articles and book chapters, and numerous presentations at scientific meetings. She regularly serves as a reviewer for national funding agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and as a peer reviewer for numerous prominent scientific journals, including Annals of Internal Medicine, Medical Care, Circulation, Social Science in Medicine, and the American Journal of Public Health. She has mentored numerous students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior investigators who have moved onto a variety of academic and professional positions, and she currently directs the Health Services post-doctoral fellowship program at her VA Medical Center.

Dr. Shanahan is an Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Community Medicine Unit within the Section of General Internal Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. He is Medical Director for the Community Health Access Record Technology (C.H.A.R.T.) Project, an ambulatory Electronic Medical record for 8 Boston HealthNet Health Centers. He conceived and developed the quarterly Clinical Computing Collaborative and three monthly Logician User Groups as collaborative educational and communication forums for network clinical computing activities. His research focus is on substance abuse, community-based research networks, and data warehousing for improving quality of medical care. Areas of particular concentration are: studying systems to increase treatment access to Out-of-Treatment Opioid Dependent Individuals, the relationship of Depression and Detoxification Utilization, Use of Genetics Counseling by Primary Care Physicians, and the development of data warehousing methods to support community-based quality research.

Dr. Sokolove is an Assistant Professor of both Medicine & Psychiatry, Dr. Sokolove is a Health Psychologist, overseeing Behavioral Medicine programming in the Section of General Internal Medicine. His clinics include Behavioral Management of Chronic Pain, Behavioral Management of Hypertension, and Stress Reduction and Relaxation Training. Through the Division of Psychiatry Dr. Sokolove also oversees the Smoking Cessation Programs for all BMC patients and employees. His research interests include designing and evaluating behavioral maintenance programs for the skills acquired in each of his clinics and issues that stem from integrating Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine into Primary Care settings. Dr. Sokolove has a particular interest in teaching behavioral management techniques for managing chronic pain to primary care providers.

Dr. Tsui’s main research interest is in characterizing adverse health outcomes associated with chronic hepatitis C virus infection, including its effects on quality-of-life and risk for non-hepatic complications. Dr. Wright is an Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Medicine and a senior investigator in the Medical Information Systems Unit (MISU). She is a behavioral scientist with an interest in the field of behavioral informatics. Her research interests focus on designing computer-assisted interventions that target cancer prevention behaviors (e.g., healthy diet, regular physical activity, weight management) that are delivered in primary care settings. Dr. Wright is currently developing behavioral informatics systems that use electronic health records (EHR) and telephony systems to increase healthy behaviors in adult and pediatric patient populations. She is a co-investigator on multiple NIH and RWJ funded behavioral intervention projects, and a recipient of a Cancer Prevention, Control, Behavioral and Population Sciences Career Development Award (NCI K07).
