This is to inform you that the Office of Financial Affairs has initiated a reorganization plan, which when completed this summer, will enable us to better utilize our existing resources to support the significant growth which the Medical Campus has experienced in its educational, research, and clinical activities. The major elements of this reorganization plan are as follows: Janis Roberts, effective August 1, 1998, will step down as Executive Director of Financial Affairs and assume the position of Project Manager, reporting to me. In this role, she will coordinate Medical Campus financial systems development projects and oversee various special projects. In addition, she will continue to provide financial oversight for Medical Campus/Biosquare development projects and provide liaison support for internal and external auditors. Barbara Cole, effective August 1, 1998, will succeed Janis Roberts as Executive Director of Financial Affairs. In this role, she will direct the Financial Affairs and Research Administration operations. Three directors will report to her; the Director for Financial Planning and Budget, the Director for Research Administration, and the Director for Financial Accounting and Operations. The Director for Financial Planning and Budget position is responsible for budget and financial planning oversight for the Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, and Public Health. We are actively recruiting for this position. On a related note, we express our gratitude and good wishes to Linda Mellen who oversaw the Medical Campus budget process in an exemplary fashion for more than fifteen years. She recently left the Office of Financial Affairs to assume the position of Financial Manager for the School of Public Health. The Director for Research Administration has oversight of pre and post award sponsored program activity. Barbara Cole currently holds this position. Although she will vacate this position when she steps up to the Executive Director position, she will continue to be actively engaged in research administration. Barbara has recently commenced the search for her successor. Herbert Lewis is promoted to the position of Director for Financial Accounting and Operations, overseeing the cash, accounts payable, payroll, and general accounting operations for the Medical Campus. General Accounting functions include fiscal oversight for salary funds (-8 source numbers) and internally designated funds (-9 source numbers), billing and collection for various accounts; as well as providing loan check endorsement services for students. Herb is also responsible for overseeing the paymaster operation for Medical Campus practice plans. We are committed to providing uninterrupted service and support to you as we effect these changes. Please do not hesitate to contact Janis Roberts, Barbara Cole, Herb Lewis, or Bill Gasper should you have any questions or concerns regarding the reorganization within the Office of Financial Affairs, or the services which we provide in support of your activities.

This is to inform you that, effective June 1st, there will be a change in the dining operations at Chequers (located on the bottom level in the School of Medicine Instructional Building) and Chequers Express (adjacent to the 1st floor reception area in the School of Dental Medicine). For the past 11 years, Chequers and Chequers Express have been managed by Boston University Dining Services. Recently, as a result of an evaluation as to how we could best meet our objective to expand and further enhance the dining offerings for the Medical Campus community, we invited Mr. Manny Sarkis, the owner/operator of El-Misk, a local restaurant located at 714 Commonwealth Avenue, to assume management of Chequers/Chequers Express. El-Misk is frequented and is well received by many Charles River Campus faculty, staff and students. We are confident that Manny’s cuisine will be appreciated and enjoyed by faculty, staff and students on the Medical Campus, as well. Manny will be working with Alice Moore, current Chequers/Chequers Express manager, and her staff over the next several weeks to effect a smooth transition. Manny will continue to offer most of the existing menu (and the existing prices), as well as introducing a number of Middle Eastern offerings. Boston University Dining Services will continue to provide catering services for major functions at Boston University Medical Campus to supplement the catering services offered by Manny. Boston University Dining Services (Catering Department) can be contacted at 353-2957. We acknowledge and thank Alice Moore, a valued Boston University Dining Services employee, for the excellent job she has done overseeing Chequers and Chequers Express since November of last year, and we wish her well, as she takes on a new assignment for Boston University Dining Services.
