Trainees

Current Trainees

Thomas Gilliland, MD
Postdoctoral Fellow

Thomas Gilliland, MD is a postdoctoral research fellow with the T32 Multidisciplinary Training Program in Cardiovascular Epidemiology in the Section of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology. He obtained his MD from the Yale University School of medicine, completed training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and is a current fellow in cardiovascular medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. His research focuses on the genetic epidemiology of cardiovascular disease.

Joowon Lee, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow

Joowon Lee, PhD is a postdoctoral research fellow with the T32 Multidisciplinary Training Program in Cardiovascular Epidemiology at the Section of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology. His research interests include physical activity for prevention of cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic stroke among older adults, atherosclerotic and vascular aging process throughout the life-course and its association with cardiovascular disease, and how physical activity may prevent or attenuate atherosclerotic and vascular aging process. He received his MS in Exercise Physiology from the University of Texas at Austin, and PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Albin Oh, MD
Postdoctoral Fellow

Albin Oh M.D. is a Research Scholar in BU Internal Medicine PRIMER (Promoting Research in Medical Residency) program and T32 Multidisciplinary Training Program in Cardiovascular Epidemiology. His research areas include pathogenesis of Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction, Cardiorenal syndrome, and impact of inflammation on development of cardiovascular diseases. He works with BU Internal Medicine Residency program and medicine residents to facilitate various academic pursuits and education. He received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Virginia and M.D. at the Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his post graduate training in Internal Medicine at Boston University/Boston Medical Center.

Rodica Petrea, MD
Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Rodica Elena Petrea joined Boston University and The Framingham Heart Study as a research scientist in stroke and dementia and as a T32 postdoctoral fellow in cardiovascular epidemiology and prevention starting in April 2020. Her main interests in epidemiology are stroke and vascular dementia epidemiology and prevention, with emphasis on the strong relationship between stroke and cardiovascular disease. Her work with the Framingham Heart Study includes “Stroke in women, Gender-specific stroke incidence and post-stroke disability outcomes in the Framingham Heart Study”, “Aortic plaque measures and indices of brain aging on volumetric brain MRI in the Framingham Offspring Study”, “Homocysteine and neurological disorders” and “Mid to late-life hypertension trends and cerebral small vessel disease in the Framingham Heart Study”.

Ibrahim Musa Yola
Postdoctoral Fellow

Ibrahim Musa Yola is an MD, holds an MPH in Epidemiology from Tulane University, and Fellowship of West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in Internal Medicine with interest in infectious and tropical diseases. He is currently enrolled in Masters of Science in Clinical Research as part of the T32 training program. His research focuses on evaluating the lifetime risk of developing heart failure in the Framingham Heart Study (FHS); looking at temporal trends between heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and those with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and other competing risks of heart failure. He is also evaluating the lifetime risk of developing left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) in the FHS using echocardiographic and electrocardiographic studies. He is also completing a manuscript on the association of lung diffusion capacity with cardiac remodeling and risk of heart failure in the community. He has further research interests in evaluating the impact of infectious agents (e.g., human immunodeficiency virus, CMV, toxoplasmosis) on cardiovascular diseases in the community as well as looking at the liver and cardiovascular diseases.
