Carl Streed Jr., MD, MPH, FACP, FAHA
Carl Streed Jr., MD, MPH, FACP, FAHA joined the Section of General Internal Medicine in 2018. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Research Lead for the GenderCare Center at Boston Medical Center (BMC). Dr. Streed is a thought leader in the areas of LGBTQ+ health, transgender care, and health equity in clinical practice.
His innovative research validates methods of identifying transgender cohorts within administrative claims data, explores opportunities for improving cardiovascular risk estimation tools as they relate to gender-affirming care, and identifies gaps in clinical practice knowledge as it relates to sexual and gender minorities (SGM) populations (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer [LGBTQ] persons). Most notably, Dr. Streed’s research has led to the expansion of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection and the assessment of SGM population health through a variety of data sources, including large administrative datasets and surveillance systems. This research work was especially innovative and led to increased awareness of the importance of collecting SOGI data.
Dr. Streed has been supported by several career development awards as an early career investigator: an AHA Career Development Award, a Providence/Boston Center for AIDS Research Development Award, an NHLBI K01 Career Development Award, and a Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Clinician-Scientist Development Award.
Dr. Streed has authored or co-authored over 90 peer-reviewed articles. His narrative review in Annals of Internal Medicine, “Cardiovascular disease among transgender adults receiving hormone therapy,” has over 200 citations and is a key study in transgender literature. He has led two high impact scientific statements from the American Heart Association (AHA) that were published in Circulation, acting as chair for “Assessing and addressing cardiovascular health in people who are transgender and gender diverse: a scientific statement from the American Heart Association.”
Dr. Streed earned his MD degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2013, where he won multiple awards for leadership activities focused on diversity, LGBTQ advocacy, and research. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore and earned a certificate in LGBT Health Policy & Practice at George Washington University. After residency, he completed a fellowship in General Internal Medicine and Primary Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He earned a Master of Public Health in clinical effectiveness from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in 2018.
