Oct. 12 Public Health Forum to Examine Inequities in Health Care Access for Immigrants
In 2006, Massachusetts enacted a pioneering health care reform law that promised universal health insurance coverage. State policymakers jettisoned a piece of this landmark commitment in 2009 when they barred more than 30,000 low-income legal immigrants from part of the health care reform program that subsidizes health insurance premiums for those with very limited means.
Health Law Advocates (HLA), a public interest non-profit law firm, challenged this state policy in a 2010 class action lawsuit contending the state’s policy violates legal immigrants’ right to equal protection guaranteed by the Massachusetts Constitution.
HLA’s Executive Director Matt Selig will speak about this immigrants’ rights case, which is set for oral argument before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on Oct. 6.
