Members of the BUSPH community are invited to attend the Faculty Research Symposium series and learn about the diverse work their colleagues and professors are doing across the areas of public health.

Kazis, who is also director of the Center for the Assessment of Pharmaceutical Practices at BUSPH, will focus on effectiveness studies comparing the Veterans Health Administration, the nations’ largest integrated health care system, with the Medicare Advantage Program, one of the major insurance components of the federal Medicare System.

Results will shed light on the impact of these two different health care systems on patient survival and health outcomes in those over 65 years of age. Future research initiatives will be described examining medication use in the Medicare system with Medicare Part D data as proxies for quality of care.

A second research initiative Kazis will present examines comparative effectiveness of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Do ARBs protect against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease or reduce their progression? The use of large claim databases to address these questions is described with the implications and limitations of these results.

Recommendations will be made of the import of findings from these two research projects. The implications of this type of work given the recent emphasis on comparative effectiveness studies will be described in light of the substantial federal government investment in research through the “Stimulus Package.”
