Please Join in Bone Marrow Registry Monday, Jan. 25 ; a cheek swab is all it takes

A bone marrow registry is being held through the Be The Match Marrow Registry on Monday, January 25 from 11:30 am – 3 pm in the BUSM Instructional Building, room L-109A/B. A simple cheek swab is all that is needed to determine if you can help one of the thousands of patients in need of a bone marrow transplant. This registry has been organized specifically for Lorraine Witzburg, the wife of Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean and Director of Admissions Bob Witzburg, MD. Lorraine has been diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

“Since my student days at BUSM, Dr. Witzburg has been an outstanding role model. ‘Bob,’ as he likes to be called, has always been passionate about medicine, patient care, as well as student and resident education. He has been a wonderful mentor, trusted colleague, and friend. Bob’s dedication to his family and the deep admiration he holds for his wife Lorraine, has always been a source of inspiration for me. I imagine that many of you feel likewise. It is in this spirit that we have organized a bone marrow drive in his wife’s honor,” explained Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of International Health Programs at BUSM Suzanne Sarfaty M.D.

Everyone is encouraged to join the marrow registry on: Monday, January 25, 2010, 11:30 AM – 3 PM, BUSM Instructional Building, 72 East Concord Street, Boston, Room L-109A/B

If you are unable to make it to the drive or would like to share this opportunity with friends and family, please go to: http://join.marrow.org/CM869 to join the registry. For medical guidelines for joining the registry (to determine if you are eligible), go to: http://www.marrow.org/JOIN/Med_Guidelines_Join/index.html.

If you are already registered, but still want to help out, please note that donations are welcome (each swab costs $50 but we will not be charged for this). Bob and his wife Lorraine have graciously said they would welcome donations to the Registry in lieu of gifts.

A blog has been created  for students /friends/faculty to share thoughts with Bob and Lorraine. Please provide your comments via the blog. Go to http://blogs.bu.edu/lorraine for the blog.
