“BioTrac 25 – Proteomics: Principles and Methods” Monday, October 3 – Friday, October 7, 2005, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (35 hours of lecture and lab training). Fee: $850
FAES offers this 5-day lecture and “hands-on” laboratory training course at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. It is team taught by active researchers and includes lecture and hands-on laboratory exercises. Each participant will receive a comprehensive binder containing all material presented in the workshop.
Topics: introduction to proteomics technology; principles and advanced methodologies with an emphasis on protein identification tools, shotgun sequencing and bioinformatics technologies; the power of 2D electrophoresis: its advantages, applications and data analysis tools for the examination of the spots of interest; high-throughput mass spectrometric-based protein identification: spot excision, in situ proteolysis, extraction of the cleavage products from the gel matrix, peptide purification and concentration as well as mass spectrometric sample preparation and analysis; isotope-coded affinity tag methods to identify and quantify low-abundance and membrane proteins; multidimensional high performance liquid chromatography-capillary electrophoresis separation of a protein digest prior to mass spectrometry for identifying low abundance proteins from complex biological mixtures; protein arrays for gene expression and molecular interaction screening; novel algorithms for protein sequence alignment to generate protein identities from partial or complete databases; new systems for obtaining detailed functional information and large-scale classification of proteins; homology modeling for predicting the 3D details of biomolecules of unknown structure.
Registration information can be obtained from Bea Sonnenberg, FAES, 301-496-2316.
Course schedule, complete course description, and content information from Mark Nardone, FAES/NIH, Bio-Trac Programs, 301-496-8290, or the Bio-Trac website. Bio-Trac, established in 1985, has provided training to over 8,500 scientists and is open to the scientific community. Class limit of 30 participants.

2nd Annual Biotechnology Workshop Series will be held Nov 2 – 4, 2005, North Shore, Lake Tahoe, NV. Two workshops: “siRNA and miRNAs: Modulating Gene Expression;” and “Clinical Proteomics and Biomarker Discovery.”
Fee: $750 for individuals, with group discounts available for the Lake Tahoe Workshop Series: 3 participants at $575 each, 4 participants at $550 each; and 5 or more participants $525 each
