Training Grant Support

Supporting School of Medicine faculty in submitting competitive institutional research training grant applications

Training Grant Preparation

Research training grants (such as the NIH T32 and the NSF NRT) support robust, multi-mentor programs that prepare graduate students and/or postdoctoral researchers for careers in biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research. Ideally, such programs should foster cross-disciplinary and convergent research.

The Proposal Development Office can assist MED faculty thinking of applying to a training grant for a new program or needing support with renewing their current training grant. For more details on how we can support you with your application, please review the commonly asked questions below.

What can we help you with?

We offer the following comprehensive suite of support to help you with your training grant application:

  • Providing an overview of relevant sponsor guidelines for each FOA
  • Preparing an application checklist with all relevant components
  • Providing template/starter language for application components such as the RCR plan, Institutional Letter of Support (ILOS) etc.
  • Creating the final budget & budget justification documents
  • Collecting all relevant data and compiling submission-ready data tables (except Table 7)
  • Facilitating consultation opportunities on as needed and available basis with the Training Grant Specialist and Grant Strategist on T32 program design best practices
  • Populating all application components into the submission portal in line with sponsor guidelines
  • Liaising with OSP for timely submission

At this time, our support does not include:

  • Table 7 (as it is applicable to renewal applications only, and is generated in xTRACT by the PI or T32 Program Manager)
  • Program evaluation
  • RPPRs and post-award program support
Generally, what does the application process look like?

Below is a general summary of what the key steps in the application process may typically look like. Please note that there may be slight variations in both the steps and their timeline, depending on the type of institutional research training grant that you are applying for.

When and how should you let us know?

Due to the intensive nature of research training grant applications, we request the following:

  • For renewal applications: please notify us at least 3 months prior to the agency submission deadline
  • For new applications: notify us at least 3-4 months prior to the agency submission deadline

If you need our support with submitting a training grant application, please let us know by completing the intake form below. A member of our office will be in touch.
