Michael Schwartz, MD

Hospitalist and Assistant Professor of Medicine Michael Schwartz, MD will serve as the Medical Director of the GIM Inpatient Teaching Service. Dr. Schwartz is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and completed his internal medicine (IM) residency training here at Boston Medical Center. He has a particular academic interest in medical education, specifically point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and bedside procedures. Dr. Schwartz is the POCUS Director and one of the IM residency’s core faculty members. He leads the development of the IM residency POCUS curriculum, including the residency POCUS pathway.

Dr. Schwartz is passionate about working with medicine residents, both directly on the wards and also supporting their teaching and research projects. As a BMC IM residency graduate himself, he appreciates the fact that the program is holistic, going beyond teaching clinical skills, and he is committed to our institutional mission to address social determinants of health.

We want to recognize and thank Dr. Thomas Ostrander for serving as Medical Director of the GIM Inpatient Teaching Service for the past 7 years. Dr. Ostrander has demonstrated excellent leadership over the service, which fosters a learning environment that often exceeds the expectations of the residency and clerkships. Dr. Ostrander has led with a steady hand, successfully responding to challenges during the COVID and post-COVID era. Under his direction, several new faculty have been successfully onboarded to the inpatient services and multiple GIM faculty have been recognized as top teachers by residents.
