Antonieta T. Camara, NP

Antonieta T. Camara, NP joined the Section of General Internal Medicine (GIM) in 2016, focusing on underserved populations in adult primary care. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and a nurse practitioner with special interests in contraception, menopause, and preconception care. Most notably, Ms. Camara initiated a program to integrate long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) into primary care, improving access to contraceptive options. Recently, along with other faculty in the Women’s Health Unit, Ms. Camara was instrumental in updating LARC credentialing guidelines across the institution, ensuring more providers can be credentialed and deliver this critical service.

In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Ms. Camara fulfills educational and leadership roles. She precepts and mentors residents, medical students, and other NPs. Ms. Camara has assumed a role on the GIM leadership team as the Clinic Lead of the Women’s Health Unit. In this leadership position, she ensures that APP voices are included in key decisions and provides support for professional development among the large group of NPs in the primary care practice.

Antonieta Camara holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Rhode Island and a Master’s degree in nursing from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. In the early 1990s, she worked with the Department of Public Health to reduce maternal mortality and improve healthcare access in underserved communities. She later served as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner at Geiger Gibson and Neponset Health Centers, where she provided gynecologic and obstetric care to a diverse patient population.
