Fellows have the opportunity to establish a longitudinal, continuity clinic as well as participate in several clinical rotations, including:

Core Rotations:

BMC Addiction Consult Service (ACS) a multi-disciplinary inpatient team consisting of a social worker, a wellness and recovery advocate, advance practice practitioners and physicians working with hospitalized patients to diagnose substance use disorder, assess readiness to initiate treatment and linkage to outpatient care.

BMC OBAT (Office Based Addiction Treatment) is the largest hospital-based addiction treatment program in New England. This program provides specialized treatment for substance use disorder in a primary care setting centered around a nurse care manager model.

Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program is a community health center and respite supporting people experiencing homelessness.

CATALYST (The Center for Addiction Treatment for Adolescents/Young adults who use Substances) is a multi-disciplinary treatment program providing access to a wide range of services including primary care, harm reduction, assessment and treatment of substance use disorders, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and recovery support for patients through age 25 and their families.

Children’s Hospital Boston: The Adolescent Substance Use & Addiction Program (ASAP) a clinical and research center committed to reducing substance use and related disorders in children and adolescents. ASAP treatment team includes developmental-behavioral trained pediatricians, licensed independent social workers, and psychiatrists.

Faster Paths is a low-barrier bridge clinic that offers rapid access to medication for substance use disorder, overdose prevention services, outpatient medically managed withdrawal and HIV/STI counseling and prevention.

Opioid Treatment Program
This local opioid treatment program located within walking distance of Boston Medical gives fellows the opportunity to learn more about methadone treatment by performing intakes, history and physical and dosing adjustments.

St Elizabeth’s Comprehensive Addiction Program (SECAP) is a Level 4 certified medically monitored inpatient detoxification program as well as Massachusetts’ oldest and most established center focused on the treatment of substance use disorder.

Veterans Mental Health and Addiction Programs (VMHAP) is a Dual Diagnosis Substance Use Disorder Treatment program with includes outpatient day treatment, intensive outpatient treatment and short-term residential treatment.

Additional Rotations: 

Project RESPECT (Recovery, Empowerment, Social Services, Prenatal care, Education, Community and Treatment) is a high risk obstetric and addiction recovery medical home that provides on-site, collaborative and multidisciplinary care for pregnant and post-partum patients in recovery.

Suffolk County House of Corrections is medically supervised withdrawal management program of people who are incarcerated with substance use disorder.

Observations:

AHOPE (Access, Harm Reduction, Overdose Prevention and Education) is a harm reduction and needle exchange site provide a wide range of services to people who use drugs.

Project ASSERT (Alcohol & Substance abuse Services, Education and Referral to Treatment) provides screening and brief intervention to patients in BMC’s Emergency Department as well as referrals to acute treatment services and crisis stabilization services.

Project TRUST started in 1988 in response to the first wave of HIV in Boston among persons who use injection drugs, is made up of compassionate community health workers, who use their lived experience to guide people in active addiction. This street level drop-in center provides harm reduction case management and supplies, basic clinical care, HIV/HCV/STI testing and linkage.

Rapid ACCESS (Assessment, Connection, Counseling and Engagement with SUD services) connects patients with substance use disorder to harm reduction and evidence-based treatment at Boston Medical Center and within the surrounding community.
